Default Dell Axim X51v

Well I bought myself a little early Christmas present.....

A Dell Axim 51v. This thing is sweet. Other PDA companies are going more with the phone route....Dell went the application/graphics/entertainment route with their PDAs.

Here is the comparison: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs

I got the one on the far left. Fastest processor....16Mb graphics engine....64Mb Ram/256Mb Rom memory. These new little gizmos have Microsoft® Windows Mobile ® 5.0 with Windows Media Player 10 Mobile.

It uses Rom memory instead of ram for programs...this way if you run out of juice you will not lose anything. They are a little slower by doing that...but...I do not care. It also saves on battery. Mine has the 624Mhz processor and it is quite speedy. After I loaded all my stuff...then I thought about the BIOs of this thing...of course I had the original. So I had to download and flash that....made a difference in its fussyness. More stable. However, I had to reload everything....many "soft resets". that part is unavoidable with any PDA.

Play a couple of games on it to check out the 3D 16Mb graphics....pretty sweet. 640x480...where others are only 320x240. Also I added a DVD converter...I can squeeze a whole DVD down to 128Mb and store it on one of my 1Gb chips. The quality is fantastic. I was surprised. I am also going to store MP3s on it and use it for a player. Why get an iPod when I can have one of these for about the same price. It has a Stereo Conversion 16-bit stereo. It sounds pretty nice with decent headphones.

I also want to get a GPS later on. A Blue Tooth one. This thing has Wireless built in as well as the Blue Tooth.

Mrs Dood kinda grumbled about this thing....but what the hey...she can't say anything....I got her a real nice phone recently...among other cool stuff for Christmas.

Dood is getting into the Christmas spirit.....Finally!

Ah, another PDA-fan

I'm into high-tech gizmo's as well. My first was an iPaq H3870, followed by the H3970, H5450, H5550, and HX4700. My phones: SE P900, P910a, and now the Imate JAM.

I just sold my HX4700 to my bro... the VGA screen is gorgeous, but after getting the JAM, I never carried the HX4700 anymore. The JAM's GPRS connectivity = internet anywhere, any time, with all the usuall PPC games to boot! While Apple is just finally releasing their video Ipod's, I've been watching full length movies on my PDA's for years.

I didn't bother with the K-JAM... too many growing pain issues. However, I am looking forward to the SE P990 IF they make an 850mhz version for the US.

Wow....yer an experianced PDA person. I am still kinda learning. Mrs Dood bought me a iPaq 1945 2 years ago....I never liked it. It was slow (266Mhz) and no wireless. I could have bought a wireless SD card...but then it would stick out of the top. I ended giving it to my college student son. I wanted an all in one unit. The Dell has a good feel to it too with it's rubber sides and back. The iPaq I had was too thin and bugged me when holding it.

There are other PDAs as you well know that are just as good and even better then the Dell ones (for different stuff) but they are allot more expensive. Dell had a decent price and I jumped on it...with online coupon in hand to boot. So there is an 850Mhz eh? Decent!

If you really want to get indepth info about PPC's, www.brighthand.com has an excellent user PPC forum. There's also www.howardforums.com for pda + phone convergence devices. They cover all sorts of pda+phone models, services, OS's, etc... good stuff, but it gets expensive riding the bleeding edge.

EDIT: Make sure to match your new PDA with a blue-tooth equipped phone if you want to do any mobile surfing. Unlimited data plans start as little as $20/month. GPRS connections (especially with EDGE) are fast enough to use for mobile GW!
